Glorify Conference

Last year, my good friend, Todd Twining, who is the worship pastor at Metro Life Church in Orlando, asked me if I’d be interested in having my entire family (me, Julie, our six kids, three in-laws, and four grandchildren) come down to participate in a worship conference at his church. He didn’t have to twist my arm. So next week, Aug. 9-11, my family and I will be at the Glorify conference in Orlando, Florida. Todd helps me serve the worship leaders and teams from the Sovereign Grace churches in Florida. While this event is regional in that sense, anyone is welcome to attend. The first night, I’ll be  giving a message on Worshiping the …

Portland Seminars4Worship

On July 12 & 13  I’ll have the privilege of speaking at the Portland Seminars4Worship conference, called Journey to the Heart of Worship, put on by Integrity Music. I’ll be speaking at a main session Friday morning and teaching a couple seminars that afternoon. If you happen to live in the Portland area, and have a chance to stop by, it would be great to meet you.

Worship Leaders – The Christian Musician Summit Reflections

This past weekend I had the privilege of joining 3000 or so folks at the Christian Musician Summit – Improving Skill, Inspiring Talent, held at Overlake Christian Church in Redmond, Washington, near Seattle. My good friend Pat Sczebel, joined me from Vancouver, BC, where he serves as a pastor in Crossway Community Church. I marveled again at how diverse the body of Christ is. Ages ranged from 15 to 75, and I talked to people from every kind of denomination, meeting format, church size, and musical preference. Over two days people could attend 9 of 170 seminars that were offered, three main sessions, and two evening concerts. It was a massive …

What Books to Read?

At the WorshipGod06 conference, and a number of times since then, I’ve been asked to recommend a basic reading list for worship pastors and musicians. While no book can replace the study of God’s Word itself, other books can help us grasp biblical truths more clearly so that we return to Scripture with renewed vigor and faith. Here are a few books that I think are helpful, although I know many more could be added. This is just to get you started. I’ve listed them by category, starting with books that are smaller and more introductory in nature, and ending with books that are a more challenging (but very fruitful!) read. By the way, I wouldn’t …

At Southern Seminary

I’m at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, with my good friend and former senior pastor, C.J. Mahaney. C.J. will be speaking in the chapel services on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and i’ll be leading the singing. I’ll also be teaching two classes on those days. Wednesday night I’ll have the privilege of sharing at Clifton Baptist Church. I think this will be my 6th or 7th trip to Southern, thanks to Professor Chip Stam. I still remember the first time I drove on to the campus wondering to myself, “What in the world am I doing here?” I thought the same thing as we arrived yesterday. In his providence, God has enabled this ex-Catholic guy, …

Two Days in Pittsburgh

Back in 1991, I had the privilege of leading a Integrity Music Hosanna! project called ‘Chosen Treasure.” It was a great experience, and helped promote the songs of Sovereign Grace songwriters more than anything we had ever done. Since then, Sovereign Grace Ministries has had different interactions with the folks at Integrity. I spent the last two days at the their Seminars4Worship Event in Pittsburgh, PA, held at Northway Christian Community Church. I met some great folks there who were eager to learn more about how they could serve their churches more effectively. On Monday I did a seminar based on Col. 3:12-17 on”How Music Works in Worship.” …
